Town Watching exercises were carried out in each of the project areas. The purpose of the town watching was to identify places in the residents’ communities that are (1) dangerous, (2) safe, (3) useful in times of emergencies, and (4) public areas of interest such as public infrastructure or heritage sites. These places would be noted down and recorded during a walkabout of the area and marked as ‘positive’ or ‘negative’.
In the community mapping exercise, the participants made observations during the walkabout of their neighbourhood. The participants then transferred these observations onto a map with colour-coded notes. As a result, these community participants produced a community map with vital information that could be used for disaster risk reduction (DRR) activity planning.
The output of the mapping activities were (1) community map of the residents’ environment and (2) list of suggested community DRR actions.
