Town Watching exercises were carried out in each of the project areas.  The purpose of the town watching was to identify places in the residents’ communities that are (1) dangerous, (2) safe, (3) useful in times of emergencies, and (4) public/areas of interest such as public infrastructure or heritage sites.  These places would be noted down and recorded during a walkabout of the area and marked as ‘positive’ or ‘negative’.

The observations made during the walkabout would then be transferred onto a physical map of the area and color-coded with notes to produce a community map with vital information that could be used for disaster risk reduction (DRR) activity planning.

At the end of the exercise, the output is (1) community map of the residents’ environment and (2) list of suggested community DRR actions.
